I still remember walking into the main gate of the building and smelling a mixture of food cooking. Each of the eight flats could have been any one of eight mothers cooking, but I’d recognise my mum’s food – whilst testing my memory and trying to figure out what was in the pan.
When I opened the door and smelt the aromas, I’d usually be right. I’d then reach the kitchen and find her creating her daily masterpiece of a meal.
Molokhya was the easiest to distinguish, because it was and still is my favourite. Three times a week or more we would find it at the table, green and yummy, eaten with bread or just a spoon – we would compete to see who could make the best perfect bread spoon 🙂
The stories never end; they last forever and ever, with each similar aroma reminding me of my mum and her food.
