A Modern Agave Twist on the Classic Margarita

You’ll Need:

1 serving:
50ml Tequila (we recommend el Jimador, Tequila Blanco)
25ml Agave Syrup
25ml Fresh lime juice
Ice
Limes
Salt – optional (typically Tommys margaritas do not include a salt-rim, but we like to add it for a little extra “oomf” and decoration)

Method:

Mix all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake, shake, shake! Pour into a cocktail glass (salted if you prefer), top with more ice and lime wedges.

Tommy Margarita

Tommy’s Margarita originated in San Francisco, USA in the 1990’s at a restaurant called… you guessed it… Tommys! It’s a modern spin on the classic recipe and substitutes orange liqueur for agave syrup. The results are heavenly and the use of agave gives the citrus in the recipe its moment to shine.

Agave is an incredible succulent who’s nectar is gloriously sweet. In her book “Spirits of Latin America” cocktail expert Ivy Mix calls agave a “Jurassic” plant because in appearance agave are “hard, spiny and hardy” and can take from five to a whole thirty to fully mature! We really recommend reading her book if you’re interested in learning about the history of Latin American spirits.
