Jan's feast for Capitu, Capitolina Books and you!

UK
Each mixed session is a journey. A process which starts with a theme and evolves into a menu and a musical performance.
At this edition, it all began with the launch of Capitolina, a publisher which specialises in contemporary Brazilian literature, whose name derives from Capitu, an iconic character created by Machado de Assis in Dom Casmurro, one of his masterpieces.
In order to welcome and celebrate Capitolina in London I went to the source.
Inspired by Capitu, I thought of her coming to London and attending the event herself. What would she eat? How would I introduce her? How would she get a grasp of London? And how our guests would understand a bit more of her?

Jan’s fantastic feijoada was the first ever Cooknst dinner during our testing phase.
And the answers to these questions were all addressed in sensorial ways, in ways that food and drink can speak of places, cultures and people.
And at the same I introduce Capitu to London, London is introduced to Capitu. But It’s a first encounter. Impossible to esgotar both rich personalities — probably two of my favourite characters of all times. They are complex and creating a narrative between them proved to be challenging if common places are to be avoided.
An interplay of two tales which ended up mixed — this is Mixed Sessions at the end of the day. So to start with, our guests will be welcomed with Gin and Tonics. Probably the most popular drink in the UK, invented by the British, and more popular than ever nowadays. In two different versions, they will celebrate Capitu and  Bentinho.
But I am afraid you will have to join us to know more about them : )
The main course of the night is Capitolina and Capitu. Nothing can be more Capitu than a very traditional meal from Rio de Janeiro, her hometown.
Feijoada (black beans stew with smoked meat and sausage) also celebrates Machado de Assis, her creator, born from a black father and a Portuguese mother. And this dish is ultimately a legacy that black heritage gave us in Brazil.
We go back to London on the desert and dig into an apple crumble — comfort food at its best. Same principle as feijoada somehow. Local ingredients, laid back presentation, substance. Food to share with friends.

Travelling back and forth, Capitu and London are connected. First impressions are made and this is for good. Capitolina is here to stay and we wish it long life in London, which is generous and always seems to make room for someone new.
Welcome Capitolina!
